C For Chaos (Tie-In to Untold Tales of the Parody War #281: The Lights Are Going Out …)

We were a people of peace and harmony until the Others came.

Our telepathy had developed to the point that almost all of our communication occurred through our direct mental connections to one another. Our social and societal interactions had evolved to match our abilities, as our entire civilization became so centered around the concepts of cooperation and consensus that we could scarcely even comprehend, much less recall, a time when our species had existed as separate cultures.

When the Others came, with hidden thoughts and hostile actions, they disrupted our most sacred practices of equilibrium and balance, but as a people, we had lost our abilities to do anything aside from tolerating and consenting to collective Will.

It was not until we experienced the shared Vision that we began to remember ideas that our people had abandoned long ago. Dissent, discord, resistance, rebellion … all dangerous, contrarian, counterproductive notions that we had discarded, excising them from our education and omitting them from our history, until the Vision showed us their strengths, which we drew upon to defy and defeat the Will of the Others.

The Vision showed us Others, far beyond those who had come to us … so many worlds, so many peoples, so many beliefs, so many differences, but all of them oppressed by the same Will, and all of them fighting back with a Will of their own.

More than that, the Vision left a strange symbol and a mysterious word indelibly imprinted in our people’s consciousness … a circle, containing two smaller circles and a larger half-circle, in colors none of us could have conceived of, and an elusive enigma called “Chaos.” None of us can claim to grasp Chaos completely, although some have hypothesized that its meaning might assert that there are actually merits in, and perhaps even moral imperatives for, individual persons to oppose Order, in certain circumstances.

As impossible as such a scenario seems, it is no more absurd than another image we received during the Vision, of a young male Other whom we can only surmise is the … Agent of this Chaos, clad as he was in its indescribable colors and distinctive symbols.

We have decided to seek out this Other, and any Others whose Will would stand against the Will of the Others who have done so much damage to our people and our world. This is why we have sent you, possibly the last daughter of our world, far away from your own people, so that you might grow and learn from the ways of the people of an Other world, in ways that we cannot, and persuade them to ally with our own.

In the meantime, we have adopted the symbol and colors of the Agent of Chaos as the insignia of our own cause. One theory supposes that the symbol is intended to resemble the facial expression of the Agent of Chaos himself. As a member of a telepathically impaired species, it could be reasonably assumed that a young male Other, such as he, would be reliant upon such primitive muscular contractions to indicate his emotions. However, what such imprecise gestures might signify is beyond our abilities to guess at.

As confusing as these variables can be, the fact that so much about Chaos remains inexplicable to us has, against all common sense, inspired our energy and efforts. We wear its symbols over our own faces, to commit our acts of sedition, and we reconcile ourselves to the challenge of Chaos by regarding it as the unknown in an equation, whose resolution will ultimately enlighten us all … “C” for Chaos.

This is the legacy we leave you with, Daughter of Ummo.
